Congresswoman Eshoo Hosts Competition to Rename Net Neutrality

August 22, 2014

Yesterday, Congresswoman Anna Eshoo (D-CA), Ranking Member of the House Energy & Commerce Committee's Communications and Technology Subcommittee, announced a competition to rename or "rebrand" net neutrality, the term used to describe the principle of all Internet traffic being created equal. The FCC is currently in the process of determining the future of the Open Internet and Congresswoman Eshoo, an outspoken advocate of the Open Internet is launching a competition to help Americans understand the importance of preventing "fast lanes" on the Internet.

"Internet users know what they want and expect from the Internet, but these days all the jargon about net neutrality rules is making it difficult to know what box to check that advances their best interest," said Eshoo. "That's why I'm hosting a contest on Reddit to rebrand net neutrality and bring some clarity to an otherwise muddy legal debate before the FCC finalizes its proposed open Internet rules. If Internet users care about their right to uninhibited access to the Internet, this is their opportunity to have an impact on the process, to help put the advantage back in the hands of the Internet user, and to ensure that the free and open Internet prevails."

eBay Inc. believes the Open Internet is integral to the continued ability of small businesses to gain global opportunities that otherwise would not be available. For the continued success of the small businesses community in the United States, eBay believes that the Internet should remain Open to all and afford minimal barriers to entry for commercial and non-commercial users.
